Arvid&Marie (Arvid Jense & Marie Caye) richten hun creatief en kritisch denken op het menselijk en kunstmatig leven en alternatieve toekomstscenario’s. Ze volgen sinds 2020 een ontwikkeltraject in Tetem en doen onderzoek naar de ethische aspecten en de (on)bedoelde consequenties door het gebruik van nieuwe technologieën binnen de internationale protestbewegingen. Hoe veranderen sociale media de betekenis van protest? Draagt de ontwikkeling van nieuwe technologieën ook bij aan het ontwikkelen van nieuwe protestvormen? Maakt dit de protestbeweging toegankelijker en inclusiever?
We zien online een steeds luider wordende oproep tot verandering. Nieuwe technologieën brengen vooruitgang met zich mee en kunnen zelforganisatie versterken. Maar de keerzijde is polarisatie, controledrift en het ontstaan van mediabubbels. De maatschappelijke behoefte om de gevolgen van deze technologieën te vertalen in beleid is groot. Maar zelfs de meest democratische landen lijken niet in staat die slag naar volle tevredenheid te maken. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat de nieuwe technologieën en platforms worden ingezet om uiting te geven aan het protest.
Arvid&Marie hebben de afgelopen twee jaar verschillende protesten meegemaakt, waaronder in Hongkong en Parijs; ‘’Een ervaring die ons zowel hoopvol als verdrietig achterliet.’’ Meer recentelijk hebben ze de Nederlandse protesten en rellen tegen de coronamaatregelen van de regering gedocumenteerd. In het kader van het ontwikkeltraject in Tetem onderzoeken zij de ethiek van protest en de relatie tussen technologie en burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid. Tijdens hun ontwikkelweek in Tetem zoomden Arvid&Marie in op een ander aspect van protest: de autoriteit van de politie. Ze hebben gesprekken gevoerd met lokale activisten, onderzoekers en met de oproerpolitie en stellen vraagtekens bij repressief en streng geweld. Bieden nieuwe technologieën meer mogelijkheden om zichzelf te organiseren of meer manieren om te controleren? Terwijl het onderzoek verder vordert, wordt het onderwerp steeds boeiender.
Arvid&Marie volgen dit ontwikkeltraject in relatie tot de programmalijn Society 5.1 en het thema Dark Ethics, waarin Tetem met kunstenaars en ontwerpers onderzoekt hoe we technologie zó in kunnen zetten dat ze maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen ondersteunt en knelpunten helpt op te lossen, alsmede de ethische aspecten die daarbij een rol spelen.
Arvid&Marie (Arvid Jense & Marie Caye) focus their creative and critical thinking on human and artificial life and alternative future scenarios. They have been following a development program in Tetem since 2020 in which they research the ethical aspects and (un)intended consequences of the use of new technologies within international protest movements. How are social media changing the meaning of protest? Does the development of new technologies also contribute to the development of new forms of protest? Does this make the protest movement more accessible and inclusive?
We are seeing an increasing shout for change online. New technologies bring progress and can strengthen self-organization. But the downside is polarization, the drive to control and the creation of media bubbles. There is a growing social need to translate the consequences of these technologies into policy. But even the most democratic countries do not seem able to do so. Therefore it’s no surprise that new technologies and platforms are being used to express protest.
Arvid&Marie have witnessed several protests over the past two years, including the ones in Hongkong and Paris. “An experience that left us both hopeful and sad”. More recently they have been documenting the Dutch riots against the government’s corona measures. During their development program in Tetem they explore the ethics of protest and the relationship between technology and civil disobedience. During their residency week at Tetem, Arvid&Marie zoomed in on another aspect of protest: the authority of the police. Talking to local activists, researchers and with riot police, they question repressive and strict force. Are new technologies giving more opportunity to self-organize or more ways to control? While the plot thickens, the topic is getting more and more fascinating.
Arvid&Marie’s development program connects to Tetem’s program theme Society 5.1 and the theme Dark Ethics. With these themes Tetem, artists and designers research the ethical aspects of technology and how we can use technology in such a way that it supports social developments and needs.
