Chapter II: The Elephant in the Room

De virtuele expositie The Elephant in the Room is het tweede hoofdstuk van Playbour City Engines gemaakt door ontwerpersduo The Rodina in samenwerking met School of Speculation (SOS) uit London. Hoe kan kritisch design bestaande onderwijsmodellen doorbreken?

In deze virtuele expositie stap je het oude Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre binnen. Je kijkt rond op de verschillende verdiepingen en in ruimtes en winkels. In elke ruimte tonen deelnemend kunstenaars, designers en wetenschappers van SOS 2020 hun projecten op het gebied van digitaal activisme, nieuwe werkrituelen, het doorbreken van kapitalistische systemen en het creëren van beter hoger onderwijs. Ontdek de verschillende workshops, cursussen en lezingen, het onderzoek en de hoofdexpositie bij de bioscoopfoyer.

Chapter II is geïnspireerd door het gedachtengoed van het oude Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre uit Londen dat voor velen een plek van hoop was. Sinds de oprichting in 1965 als een van de eerste winkelcentra in Amerikaanse stijl, groeide het winkelcentrum uit tot het middelpunt van een bloeiende minderheidsgemeenschap in het centrum van Londen. Het winkelcentrum heeft jaren van commerciële druk getrotseerd tot de sloop op 30 juli 2020. Het was uiteindelijk niet bestand tegen de druk van de lokale overheid en de grote herontwikkelingsplannen. Voor velen leeft het centrum voort als een voorbeeld van hoe dingen anders kunnen worden gedaan.

School of Design probeert bestaande onderwijsmodellen gericht op kapitalisme en consumentisme te doorbreken en alternatieven te bieden voor beter hoger onderwijs in samenwerking met kunstenaars, ontwerpers en (culturele) instellingen.

The virtual exhibition The Elephant in the Room is the second chapter of Playbour City Engines created by designer duo The Rodina in collaboration with School of Speculation (SOS) from London. In this second chapter, The Rodina continues to focus on the transformation of (online) public spaces into sites of play and the question of how to build closeness and commonness through digital platforms.

Chapter II is inspired by the transformation of London’s old Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, which was a place of hope for many, from its origins in 1965 as one of the UK’s first American-style shopping malls turning into the centre-piece of a thriving minority community in central London. It has defied years of commercial pressure to bend to the will of corporate merchandising, and lives on here as a statement of how things can be done differently. Demolition of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre began on July 30th 2020. Unable to resist the pressure from local government and big business, the shopping centre fell to larger redevelopment plans.

School of Speculation and The Rodina are co-opting this space of critical urbanism to enlighten its own cause toward an alternative to higher education. Visitors are welcome to enter a virtual online show in a huge shopping mall that reflects today’s education challenges. Students can no longer afford extortionate fees paired with a move towards the delivery of capitalised consumer-style education. A crisis in the Arts looms as art, design and architecture courses increasingly pander to industry and governments lobbying for vocational and skills-based courses. As SOS looks to dismantle this toxic paradigm, perhaps there are lessons to be learnt from the Elephant’s successes?

SOS is an independent and nomadic critical design school that aims to challenge current models of delivering higher education. Through partnerships between museums, galleries, libraries and other public institutions, SOS aims to build relationships between the diverse latent pedagogy in our cities to create a different kind of educational offer.
