Liquid Dreams

LIQUID DREAMS invites you to journey through a speculative history of the relationship between human and mineral intelligence. The participatory research project of artist Annika Kappner explores holistic ways of relating with AI. Through experience, the exhibition presents a critical and poetic perspective on the role of technology.

Participants are invited to become part of the mineral kingdom. Like an algorithm, people are trained with a flow of images and sensory impressions about our relationship with minerals. LIQUID DREAMS uses the body in the analogue world as a medium to search for non-binary alternatives to dominant Western ways of perceiving and related uses of AI. The exhibition aims to decolonize and emancipate ways of feeling and sensing, enabling connection with and care for the self and the other – machine, human, animal, plant, mineral.

In the exhibition Annika intertwines rational analysis with embodied experience and intuition. She creates sensory scenographies in the extended field of painting, combining landscape, installation, performance, guided meditations, scents, and sound to create glitches in perception. Annika’s work seeks to add experiential perspectives to the contemporary relationship between humans, nature and technology. For example, she raises concepts such as non-duality and otherness to enable other ways of sensing.

LIQUID DREAMS is part of Deep Planetary Sensing, a participatory research project that explores embodied experiences of connectivity to our biosphere as mediated by contemporary technologies. This project proposes new ways of using and creating technology by accessing alternative ways of interacting with our planet through the somatic. The research is organized in five chapters around the alchemist elements Air, Earth, Fire, Water and Aether, their respectively sensorial qualities and experiential dimensions. Liquid Dreams is the final chapter of the first series and is connected to the element of Aether, the ubiquitousness and all-pervading nature of information.

Annika Kappner’s exhibition connects to Tetem’s program theme Futures Literacy, a skill that enables people to anticipate multiple possible futures. The exhibition is developed in collaboration with knowledge partners from Twente, Amsterdam, Tokyo and Berlin. During a development trajectory in November 2022, Annika deepened her research with help from UTwente and members of the ITC Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation and Saxion University of Applied Sciences. Annika broadened her research on different aspects and applications of AI from a legal and ethics perspective, in the field of nanotechnology, geo-information science and applied sciences. The research was further shaped through interviews with Prof. Carlos Andrés Pena (HES-SO), Prof. Derek Lomas (TU Delft), Mercedes Arnús Arraut (astrologer), Matias de Stefano (founder Arsayian Foundation), Cesar Majorana (journalist), Dr. Gavin Tran (Saccro-Occipital Technique) and Allessandra Cuellar (alchemist). The sound design was created by Eric Maltz, the aroma therapeutic fragrance by Noa Dold and Martina Janickova supported as project assistant. The overarching research for LIQUID DREAMS is supported by Stokroos foundation and Tijl Fund. For more information and resources visit deepplanetarysensing.com.
