Model Collapse @ Noorderlicht
Cyanne van den Houten and Ymer Marinus are part of the media art collective Telemagic . With their technologically magical interactive installations, Telemagic critically examines the social impact of artificial intelligence (AI). By hacking, connecting and investigating, Telemagic invites you to think about the creative possibilities and consequences of working with algorithms.
Model Collapse is an immersive installation that takes you to a hidden landscape behind AI. The cyber sculptures each have their own algorithmically defined shape and character. These sculptures question dominant perspectives by letting the visitor experience a counter-narrative. They talk about mystification, gender bias, non-Western algorithmic practices, the ecological footprint and labor, in relation to artificial intelligence. As a visitor, you can get in direct contact with the cyber sculptures by typing your question into the central interface. A local language model determines your location within the digital environment in which the cyber sculptures are located. The nearest sculpture awakens in response and shares its knowledge. Your search triggers a chain of events, brings the cyber sculptures to life and creates a story.
Curious? Model Collapse can be experienced at the Niemeyer factory in Groningen, as part of the Noorderlicht Biennale 2025. This 2025 edition investigates how technology shapes our lives, and focuses on the relationship between technology, ecology and heritage. Model Collapse can be seen from 12 July until the end of August. You can buy your tickets on site, or in advance online via noorderlicht.com
