Online AR Sandbox: Dig your own hole!

The AR Sandbox is an interactive and playful sandbox where you can create dynamic landscapes, using Augmented Reality. Simply shape the sand and watch the landscape comes alive! 100% FAT has further developed the sandbox for the MaakMeeMaand into a hybrid installation that makes it possible to use it online with the help of a radio-controlled excavator!

The UC Davis AR Sandbox is an interactive sandbox and a powerful education tool where dynamic landscapes can be created with the help of Augmented Reality. Dig your meandering river yourself, create your own mountains and see how that effects the landscape. An interactive projection shows height differences in the landscape as contour lines on the sand. If you dig deep enough, you will automatically find water to keep your river(s) flowing. Besides being fun, this project also aims to teach geographic concepts and raise awareness of freshwater ecosystems that are currently under the threat of environmental changes.

For the MaakMeeMaand, 100% FAT in collaboration with Heinze Havinga and Edwin Dertien developed the AR Sandbox into a hybrid installation that allows visitors to use the sandbox both online and offline. A radio-controlled excavator is attached to the sandbox, which you can operate remotely via an online portal. The portal shows a real-time live stream of the sandbox and various buttons to control the excavator. The AR Sandbox: Dig your own hole! will be accessible online during the MaakMeeMaand throughout May, so that you can play remotely in Tetem and create new landscapes together!

The AR Sandbox: Dig your own hole! is part of the MaakMeeMaand, in which experiencing the maker culture and technology is central. The hybrid version is  developed by 100% FAT within the WetropolisRD Consortium. In this project group, ways and models are being developed that map the consequences of climate change on water management.

Digital opening hours of the AR Sandbox in May:
Monday to Friday from 3 pm-5 pm.
Saturday and Sunday from 11 am-12.30 pm.
Registration is not necessary.
The excavator only works on desktop computers.
