English ‘Underneath the wings of a butterfly’ is een reis waarbij je een vlinder volgt door een hedendaags masker van geluk. Dit masker is glanzend en goudkleurig. Maar daarachter gaat een wereld schuil waarin de natuur vergaat, het klimaat drastisch verandert, een revolutie aan het opborrelen is en de planeet waarop we leven zichzelf opnieuw moet uitvinden. De tentoonstelling nodigt uit om deze wereld te herontdekken en zaden uit het verleden te hervinden en te planten, om zo bij te dragen aan een hoopvolle toekomst. Abner Preis is een kunstenaar en verhalenverteller die met zijn kleurrijke, humoristische en kritische installaties een hoopvolle boodschap overbrengt. Hij combineert eenvoudige tekeningen en vrolijke, collageachtige achtergronden met beleving en interactie in digitale werelden. In deze tentoonstelling zijn deelnemers het middelpunt van een wereld die zich volledig afspeelt in Augmented en Virtual Reality.
Abner ontwikkelde voor ‘Underneath the wings of a butterfly’ een Augmented Reality installatie waarbij de deelnemer via een augmented vlinder door een wereld wordt geleid die beïnvloed wordt door mensen, maar uiteindelijk wordt overgenomen door technologische vlinders, bijen en low poly bloemen. De AR-installatie geeft toegang tot een wereld waarin urgente vraagstukken zoals klimaatverandering, de vluchtelingencrisis, economische recessie en consumentisme bijna tastbaar worden.
Midden in deze AR wereld is de VR-ervaring The Miracle Basket opgesteld. In deze installatie ben je het middelpunt van een verhaal dat een grootvader vertelt over zijn zorgeloze verleden en de tijd waarin mensen in harmonie leefden met de natuur. De komst van een ruimteschip vol mensen, consumptiegoederen en logo’s van Nike tot Mars en McDonald’s maakt de dorpelingen nieuwsgierig, maar verandert het paradijselijke dorp al snel in een apocalyptische wereld. Tijdens deze VR reis ontdek je welke beslissingen tot veranderingen kunnen leiden en welke rol je als mens kunt spelen in het creëren van een hoopvolle toekomst.
Over de kunstenaar
Abner Preis werkt met nieuwe media, performances en ruimtelijke installaties waarin het sprookje als vertelvorm centraal staat. In de werken van Abner spelen ‘new beginnings’ een belangrijke rol. Abner wil met zijn werk mensen inspireren en laten zien dat verandering mogelijk is door te leren van het verleden en betere keuzes voor de toekomst te maken. Het werk van Abner sluit aan bij Tetem’s programmalijn Society 5.1. In deze programmalijn onderzoeken we – samen met makers – welke consequenties onze keuzes hebben voor de samenleving en hoe technologie ons kan helpen om knelpunten op te lossen. Abner Preis heeft zijn eerste project in Virtual Reality ontwikkeld in Tetem voor de tentoonstelling Walk-in Worlds. Sindsdien zijn Virtual Reality en Augmented Reality binnen zijn praktijk een belangrijk medium geworden om verhalen, tekeningen en collages ruimtelijk tot leven te brengen.
Deze tentoonstelling is een co-productie met Institute of Time, een interdisciplinair film- en new mediabedrijf gevestigd in Utrecht en Istanbul en gespecialiseerd in AR en VR producties. De VR installatie The Miracle Basket is ontwikkeld in samenwerking met Valk Productions.
The Miracle Basket Educatieprogramma
Abner Preis en Institute of Time ontwikkelen samen met Tetem een educatieprogramma en een toolkit over The Miracle Basket voor het primair en voortgezet onderwijs in Nederland en het buitenland. Kinderen en jongeren ervaren het verhaal in VR en leren middels roleplay en een quiz over wat klimaat, duurzaamheid en inclusiviteit voor hun toekomst betekenen. Ze starten hun eigen klimaatactie door seedboms te maken, over mos graffiti te leren en een eigen guerrilla gardening strategie te ontwikkelen. De toolkit wordt vanaf schooljaar 2023-2024 aangeboden aan het onderwijs.
In ‘Underneath the wings of a butterfly’ Abner Preis tells a story about beauty, humour, sorrow and the destruction and rebirth of our world. He invites us to rediscover and plant seeds from the past to contribute to a hopeful future. In this exhibition, participants are the center of a world that takes place entirely in Augmented and Virtual Reality.
Underneath the wings of a butterfly is a journey where we follow a butterfly through a contemporary mask of happiness. This mask is shiny and golden, plastic and metal – but behind it is a world where nature is decaying, climate is drastically changing, the fever of revolution is boiling and the planet we live on is reinventing itself. The exhibition invites you to rediscover this world and plant seeds from the past, in order to contribute to a hopeful future. Abner Preis is an artist and storyteller who conveys a hopeful message with his colourful, humorous and critical installations. He combines simple drawings and cheerful, collage-like backgrounds with experience and interaction in digital worlds.
In this exhibition, participants are the center of a world that takes place entirely in Augmented and Virtual Reality. For Underneath the wings of a butterfly, Abner developed an Augmented Reality installation where the participant is lead by an augmented butterfly through a world that is influenced by humans, but eventually gets taken over by technological butterflies, bees and low poly flowers. The AR installation provides access to a world where urgent issues such as climate change, the refugee crisis, economic recession and consumerism become almost tangible.
The VR experience The Miracle Basket has been set up in the middle of this AR world. In this installation you are the center of a story that a grandfather tells about his carefree past and the time when people lived in harmony with nature. The arrival of a spaceship full of people, consumer goods and logos from Nike to Mars and McDonald’s makes the villagers curious, but soon turns the paradise village into an apocalyptic world. During this VR journey you will discover which decisions can lead to changes and which role you can play as a human being in creating a hopeful future.
About the artist
Abner Preis works with new media, performances and spatial installations focusing on the fairy tale as a narrative form. In Abner’s works, “new beginnings” play an important role. With his work, Abner wants to inspire people and show that change is possible by learning from the past and making better choices for the future. Abner’s work ties in with Tetem’s program theme Society 5.1. In this program theme Tetem researches – together with makers – the consequences our choices have on society and how technology can help us solve bottlenecks. Abner Preis developed his first project in Virtual Reality at Tetem for the exhibition Walk-in Worlds. Since then, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality have become an important medium within his practice to bring stories, drawings and collages spatially to life.
This exhibition is a co-production with Institute of Time, an interdisciplinary film and new media company based in Utrecht and Istanbul and specializing in AR and VR productions. The VR installation The Miracle Basket was developed in collaboration with Valk Productions.
The Miracle Basket Education Program
Abner Preis, Institute of Time and Tetem are developing an education program and toolkit about The Miracle Basket for primary and secondary schools in the Netherlands and abroad. Children and youth experience the story in VR and learn through roleplay and a quiz about what climate, sustainability and inclusiveness mean for their future. They start their own climate action by making seed bombs, learning about moss graffiti and developing their own guerrilla gardening strategy. The toolkit will be offered to schools starting in the 2023-2024 school year.
