Lichamen zijn niet statisch en ongerept. Ze besmetten elkaar, mengen zich, laten sporen achter en creëren nieuw leven. Lichamen muteren, veranderen en transformeren; het is aanpassen of sterven! Deze transformaties gebeuren ongemerkt en continu. Ons hormonale lichaam wordt dagelijks verstoord door giftige luchtdeeltjes die we inademen en door de microplastics die we via voedsel binnenkrijgen. Bij iedere aanraking vindt een uitwisseling van miljoenen onzichtbare microben tussen lichamen plaats. De vraag is dan ook: hoe te leven als de xenomutaties (xeno = vreemd) die we nu eenmaal zijn? Hoe verandert ons denken over onszelf wanneer we geconfronteerd worden met de onophoudelijke transformatieve relaties van onze eigen lichamen?
Muterende lichamen vereisen een herdefiniëring van datgene dat we als een levend lichaam beschouwen. In de tentoonstelling Xenobodies in Mutation onderzoeken de kunstenaars Sonja Bäumel, Mary Maggic en Špela Petrič de verschillende betekenissen van onze xenobodies. Welke implicaties hebben muterende lichamen op onze voortplanting, seks en geslacht? Wat betekent de continue uitwisseling van microben tussen menselijke en niet-menselijke lichamen, voor onszelf en de natuur? En wat gebeurt er als de muterende lichamen een relatie aangaan met technologie? We zijn altijd al xeno geweest, de uitdaging ligt in hoe we over onze muterende lichamen moeten denken, en hoe we ermee kunnen leven en werken.
Xenobodies in Mutation is samengesteld door curator Agnieszka Anna Wołodźko. De tentoonstelling sluit aan bij Tetem’s programmalijn Driving Technology en is onderdeel van GOGBOT festival 2019.
Exploring-Lab: Bioplastic maken
Ons lichaam krijgt onbedoeld kleine stukjes plastic binnen bij het eten van verschillende soorten voedsel, het drinken uit plastic flessen, of door simpelweg lucht met microplastics in te ademen. De gezondheidseffecten van microplastics zijn nog onbekend en de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie heeft een oproep gedaan om het gebruik van plastic zoveel mogelijk te beperken. Kan bioplastic hierin verschil maken? Ga in aansluiting op de tentoonstelling Xenobodies in Mutation ‘aan de kook’ met natuurlijke materialen. Vermeng en verwarm diverse ingrediënten in een pannetje, kies een kleur en laat de ontstane massa drogen. Wat je krijgt is echt plastic, maar op natuurlijke basis én afbreekbaar. Tetem’s Exploring-Lab is dagelijks geopend van 13.30-16.30.
Educatieprogramma
Binnen het onderwijsprogramma van Xenobodies in Mutation onderzoeken leerlingen van het primair (PO groep 7/8) en voortgezet (VO onderbouw) onderwijs onze relatie met de natuur, technologie en de materialen die we uitvinden. Hoe verandert ons lichaam door de microplastics in ons eten en drinken? De leerlingen bekijken de tentoonstelling en gaan zélf bioplastic van natuurlijke grondstoffen maken. De workshops zijn ontwikkeld door Roombeek Cultuurpark Educatie (RCE) en zijn te boeken via educatie@tetem.nl.
“We have never been one thing, one persona, one identity. Our living bodies have never been autonomous, fixed and pure. Rather, bodies are porous, risky and precarious – THEY ARE XENO – strangers, foreigners and quests to what is considered as the norm, as natural, as ideal.
We are in a constant movement of change, and with our change we contaminate ourselves and other bodies. Our mutations and contaminations are often imperceptible, they transform us slowly yet significantly. When we breathe, we become the air with its multiple particles and toxins. When we eat, we become the food we chew, disrupted in our hormonal body by plastic particles hidden in what is on our plate. When we shake hands, the skin, rather than protecting us, creates a condition of an exchange between multiple microbial greetings. We are shaped by and constituted by contaminations. This is not the equilibrium of life. Contaminations are risky, we do not know what the body can do, how the encounters will influence us. This is the precarity of life mutations that demand different practices. Bodies change and transform – we either mutate or we die! The urgent question is how to live and care for the xeno that we already are?
The exhibition Xenobodies in Mutation, showing the work of Sonja Bäumel, Mary Maggic and Špela Petrič, explores the implications of relations of transformation on the question of who are we, but also, how to practice and enact our all too human, mutating bodies. It is not about the control, selection or harvest of those transformations that we think are useful or innovative. In the name of the idea of progress and technological desires, we have already commodified and turned our bodies into a resource for economic profits and aesthetic regimes.
The urgency is not how to control those mutations, but how to multiply them and live with them, even those unexpected. It is not about blind affirmation of transformations, but recognition of inequalities and power relations that govern them. In that sense, practicing xenobodies in their consonant change escapes one method. Practicing the multiple that we are demands, rather multiple ways, rituals and tools that would be sensitive and care for the strangeness that we all are again and again anew.
Xenobodies ask how to practice the mutations and care for them, and what would that care entail? We have always been xeno-, the challenge is how to think, live and practice the mutating bodies that we are.”
